Translating Needs into Specifications
Recently, a large corporation approached American Cutting Edge with a concern.
The knife used to perforate the bags of their food products was rusting. As a result, the company was changing out knives much sooner than it wanted and was spending too much on blade maintenance.
The company had already contacted their current supplier regarding the issue; however, the supplier was unable to offer a solution.
Two primary concerns needed to be addressed in the solution:
- Stop the blade from rusting.
- The knife must pierce the packaging consistently “ every time.
The company's current knife supplier did not have the in-house talent to answer specialized questions nor could they examine the customer's current blade to find a better solution. As a result, the customer felt they had few options.
American Cutting Edge's product manager worked with the customer and the ACE engineering team to translate needs into specifications.
The result is a packaging knife that meets the environmental, precision, and budgetary needs of the customer and adds an extension to the life of the knife since the new blade does not have to be replaced for rusting.
This customer was so thrilled with the results that they are now working with ACE to improve blades throughout their operation.

Being A Reliable Expert
Sometimes, our expertise shows up best behind the scenes...like it did for a customer with a drawing tolerance issue.
What happens when one of the knives in your production line suddenly begins performing unexpectedly? What happens when that tool is manufactured based on an existing print yet, there is still something that is off?
American Cutting Edge was contacted to replicate a hook knife that was not performing as expected. As a critical element in a specialized machine, the prospective client relied on this blade to perform consistently.
The product manager at ACE secured the drawing and sent it to the factory for manufacturing. Because ACE supplies both OEMs and end users, we have access to a wealth of information. In this case, that information included the OEM's drawing for the knife.
ACE was able to review the OEM's drawing against the customer-supplied drawing and determine the critical components of the design. Without changing the customer design or drawing, ACE ensured that the critical components were held to the tightest tolerance on the customer's drawing during manufacturing.
As a result, the customer now has reliable, consistent performance from their hook knives.

Price Doesn't Always Matter “ But Cost Does
A current ACE customer was experiencing ill-fitting knives. Because the $12 blade was ill-fitting, the final product was not up to the quality standards demanded by the end customer.
This was leading to significant buy-back costs for ACE's customer.
The solution was not to keep the blade at $12 but to develop a blade that fit precisely and eliminated the costly buy-backs.
The team at ACE developed a solution that cost three times as much as the previous blade but eradicated all of the flaws that were leading to the buy-backs.
Our customer is so thrilled that they have switched to American Cutting Edge for all of their knife needs.
